What is a Discipleship Cohort?
In ancient times, a cohort was a military unit, today it’s a group of people united by purpose. Discipleship groups can range in size from one-on-one, mens and women cohorts 3-6 people or discipleship communities which are co-ed 6-12 people.
Groups and cohorts meet regularly, in homes, restaurants, coffee shops, gyms, or workplaces, to explore Vertical Pursuit resources, have spiritual conversations, and share life together.
Discipleship groups are not just discussion groups, they are about doing life together, honest relationships, accountability, and authentic discipleship. Using the strategy of Jesus, invite, invest, inspire, cohorts create spaces where people can be real, grow in faith, and experience life transformation.

Why Join a Cohort?
Being part of a cohort will:
- Let you live your life as part of something bigger than yourself.
- Grow your faith more than anything you’ve ever done.
- Give you the joy of seeing others live out their destiny and purpose.
- Build deep, lifelong relationships with those you disciple.
- Bring the Word of God to the forefront of your life.
- Allow you to leave a legacy that will echo for eternity.
Vertical Pursuit is a journey to grow as a disciple and disciple-maker. You’ll walk with the material, guide others even as you learn, and take time to reflect on your faith, your life, and your impact. Move through the material at your own pace, engage with the questions, and let this experience shape how you live, lead, and influence the world.

Jesus chose everyday believers to carry out his mission and he’s still using everyday believers today.

from spectators To disciples who disciple.
As a movement, we value quick activation of these believers, and learning on the job, over waiting until everything feels perfect. In the most rapidly multiplying church movements in the world, new believers often start communities right away, without budgets, seminaries, titles, or buildings.
You don’t need a theology degree. You don’t need to be a pastor. You don’t need to have it all figured out.
You just need to be willing.
The Great Commission wasn’t given to professionals. It was given to ordinary people who had been with Jesus, and were willing to help others do the same.
You can download or print the Cohort Starter PDF it offers tips on creating a new community in an everyday space like your living room, break room, dorm room, locker room or coffee shop.
